December 20, 2017 RE: 272492 – Cypress Bowl Road Dear [British Columbia Mountaineering Club]: Your email of November 20, 2017, regarding Cypress Bowl Road, has been shared with me. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding. I appreciated the opportunity to review your suggestion to open Cypress Bowl Road one hour earlier in the morning to accommodate visitors to Cypress Provincial Park. While the Ministry owns the road, winter maintenance is funded and delivered by Cypress...

December 2, 2017 Jesse Morwood, the area manager for MoTI spoke with me about two weeks ago and subsequent to my letter to him on November 19, 2017 regarding "permit for sign, erection or obstruction on Cypress Bowl Road by Cypress Mountain Resort." Here is what I heard. I explored with Jesse Morwood of MoTI the idea of opening Cypress Bowl Road earlier by one or two hours. A 24/7 opening would probably be impractical because MoTI would not agree to have the road open and not maintained. Of...

November 19, 2017 Jesse Morwood Area Manager, Squamish/Whistler Area Office Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Suite 310 - 1500 Woolridge Street Coquitlam BC V3K0B8 By Email: Jesse.Morwood@gov.bc.ca Dear Mr. Morwood, RE: Permit for sign, erection or obstruction on Cypress Bowl Road by Cypress Mountain Resort It is my understanding that Cypress Bowl Road was classified as an "Arterial Highway" by Order in Council no. 116 in 1992. As recently as 2011, I am in receipt of an email...

November 18, 2017 An article in the North Shore News, Cypress Mountain 'dawn patrol' dispute resolved, prompted the following letter to the newspaper. The British Columbia Mountaineering Club is one of the specific mountaineering group that requires early access to Cypress Bowl. A 9 AM opening of the backcountry access corridor placed a huge risk on ski mountaineering parties skiing to Lions Bay along the Howe Sound Crest. An early start is necessary in winter due to the short days and an...

August 14, 2010 Vancouver Sun article by Derrick Penner. Your West Vancouver private hideaway? Only $1.8 million Perched on Hollyburn Ridge, overlooking the city, is a patch of mountain forest that could be someone’s private preserve. The 10-hectare square, located a kilometre by logging road off the Cypress Bowl Road, is on the market for $1.8 million. However, anyone thinking it is a bargain, given its location, will have to stop and imagine it more as a rustic park than posh estate,...

Cypress Bowl Road is open in summer all day and night. In winter, the road is closed between 11 PM and 7 AM. Here are somewhat random comments on the winter road closure. If BC Parks has any interest in dealing with demand exceeding capacity on the North Shore (of parking lots, trails, facilities), it would make sense to open the access roads earlier or have them always open except in a severe snow storm, just like any other highway in BC. It is important to clarify that it is the road that...

The Cypress Backcountry Access Corridor can now be accessed from 7AM. Note however, that the Cypress Bowl Road continues to be gated until 7AM at Chippendale Drive. In contravention to their park use permit, Cypress resorts has been preventing access to the corridor from 11PM to 9AM and this continues to be their official position. While discussions between BC Parks and Cypress continues, the new manager Russell Chamberlain will allow public access through the BAC once the road is...

November 15, 2017 Whistler Blackcomb has raised alarmist predictions that public parking up Fitzsimmons Creek would lead to wildfires on Blackcomb Mountain. Wildfire prevention practices used in Cheakamus Community Forest and Resort Municipality of Whistler are applicable in Fitzsimmons Creek. Risk from public access is manageable by what is called stand thinning according to programs dubbed "fire smart" in British Columbia. To date, no stakeholders, be it Whistler Blackcomb, Whistler...

Access to the Singing Pass Trail in Garibaldi Park near Whistler was blocked by a landslide about 25 years ago. Hikers had used the access route - which is an old mining/logging road for many years to drive to the trailhead five km up Fitzimmons Creek from Whistler Village. The landslide blocked the road about two km from Whistler and then Whistler Blackcomb built a bike park and closed the road for vehicles. This increases the total round trip to 26 km to Singing Pass or 32 km to Russet...
