Howe Sound Crest Trail North

Trail Authorization Status: Unknown

This track shows one possible track for the proposed extension of the Howe Sound Crest Trail north section. In this track, the portion from Capilano Mountain north to Goat Ridge is shown.

Phase One is already constructed. It follows the access route from Furry Creek to Mountain Lake. This section of the trail services the tenured hut owned by British Columbia Mountaineering Club.

Phase Two is proposed from Mountain Lake to Goat Ridge-Copilot col.

Further phases would see the following sections developed:

  1. Capilano Mountain to Downing Creek road. This section follows a backcountry ski route that has been used in the past.
  2. The so-called Chanter Ridge, which lies between Furry Creek and Downing Creek. This rugged ridge has been climbed on skis from Furry Creek by gaining the ridge at its east end.

What would be the link between HSCT and Capilano Mountain? Via Peacock Lake area or other?

One possibility is the Beth Lake Trail but that's only half of it. I could suggest a route down from Deeks Peak following the ridgeline north. I have not been to Peacock Lake. Is there a trail or a good route down to Phyllis Lake?

I've only read about a single trip to Peacock ... and haven't scouted myself, and couldn't tell much looking South from the logging road to see if one route was more promising than another.

Hints of some more trails by Phyllis here http://forums.clubtread.com/27-british-columbia/43591-marion-phyllis-lakes.html
... also interested where this might lead:
"Returning back to the road, I passed by rock with some paint signs, next to a gully and several flags leading as far up as I could see -- anyone knows what this is?"

Note from the person who scouted Peacock when asked about continuing:

"It's pretty steep terrain from the peak area down to the valley and it's also in the Watershed which may be patrolled. if you could go northwards (instead of eastward) and drop down near Phyllis Lake that might work but it looks steep on a map."

I think a route going to Peacock Lake is out of the question due to it being inside the Capilano watershed. From Lost Lake it looks like the ridge to the east could be followed northward to drop down to the Phyllis and Marion Lakes road. Whether it's possible to traverse the entire ridge north of Deeks Peak needs investigation.

Aah, you're right, it would hit down on the wrong side of the water divide line, wouldn't it. Not by far, but far enough.

Looks like David Crerar (I think that's who DAC_Van is) found a map of an old trail that would link HSCT to HSCT North ... from the 70's but a good place to start.

Hi Ian. Paul K is best to answer this. We are still putting the finishing touches on the site so are a little distracted still
